What's with the new crop of movies remade for 3D? Except for a computer-generated animated film, I don't understand how that can be done without requiring major amounts of reshooting, not really feasible when the actors are 40 years older.

I can see how it could be done technically. In a scene with some horizontal panning, you'll get a look at things that are hidden behind other things, and can use this information to generate an "offset" frame from an earlier point in the sequence.

At least that's how I'd try to do it. I don't know how they actually do it.

I think I might go to see the new Star Wars Episode 1 to see how they do the 3D. I'm worried the scenes with actors might be left as 2-D. I also found it interesting how George Lucas approached the 3-D project. First, he sought help from James Cameron, who's considered a top expert in 3-D films (Avatar). Then he went out for bids to see what company would do the 3-D conversion!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess Industrial Light and Magic is not state-of-the art anymore.

I haven't seen any of the redone films, but I gather that the effect looks like having flat cardboard cutouts at different distances from you. Perhaps if subtle enough it could look sort of realistic.

I did this picture with some care in Photoshop from a single picture. Automating the process for video would take some major programming skills.

Whoa! I was right about how they use pixels from previous and subsequent frames!

Now, if they could just add some dimension to the characters and the plot, that would be a technical achievement.
